What’s the experience like?

We started winding out of Berat before I’d even finished my coffee, the air still cool and a little sharp. Our guide, Erion, was already cracking jokes about Albanian drivers as we bumped along toward Osum Canyon. He pointed out Polican as we passed — just a cluster of concrete blocks at first glance, but he slowed down so we could see the old weapons factories from the communist days. It’s strange to think how quiet it is now compared to what he described. The road got quieter too, just us and the sound of tires humming over gravel.

Up above the canyon, I honestly didn’t expect it to feel so wide open — like you could shout and your voice would never come back. We stopped at a viewpoint where the wind whipped up dust and wild thyme, and Erion told us about Abass Ali (I probably mispronounced it; he laughed but didn’t correct me). In summer you can actually get down into the canyon itself — part hiking, part swimming — but since it was spring for us, we stuck to the rim. Still, those sheer cliffs made my knees wobble a bit. There was this moment where everyone went quiet just looking out over that drop. I still think about that view.

The walk through Bogove Park felt softer somehow — filtered light through leaves, water sounds getting louder until suddenly there it was: Bogove Waterfall. Cold spray in my face before I even got close enough to touch it. Some of us swam (I dipped a toe; that counts), others just watched their breath fog up in the chilly air. Picnic lunch by the rocks tasted better than anything fancy — maybe because we’d earned it? Anyway, nobody rushed us. On the way back Erion handed out bottled water and told one last story about his grandmother’s superstitions around waterfalls… something about luck if you let the mist hit your face first.
