What’s the experience like?

The first thing that stuck with me wasn’t even the view—it was the way our guide, Marsha, handed me a slice of black pineapple just as we pulled up to Nelson’s Dockyard. Sweetest fruit I’ve ever tasted—she laughed when I tried to describe it (“juicy times ten?”) and said locals swear it only grows this good here. The dockyard itself felt alive: old stone walls, kids running past yachts, and the smell of something baking from a tiny café tucked behind a weathered door.

We wandered through Betty’s Hope after that. The windmills creaked in the sun and Marsha explained how sugar built Antigua—didn’t sugarcoat (sorry) any of it. I touched one of the old stones; still warm from the morning heat. There’s a little museum with maps and photos—honestly, I got lost looking at faces in those faded prints. It made me think about all the hands that worked this land before us. Not sure why but that feeling lingered.

Devil’s Bridge was louder than I expected—the Atlantic just slamming into rock, sending up spray that left salt on my lips. Some people walked right out onto the arch (not me), but we stood back and watched water shoot up through cracks like geysers. Marsha told us stories about the place—some sad, some wild—and for a minute everyone just listened to the waves instead of talking.

Shirley Heights came later, with its wide-open view over English Harbour—boats scattered like dice below us. There was music drifting from somewhere (someone tuning up for later maybe?), and we just sat on an old wall for a while. The tour ended at Valley Church Beach—sand so soft it squeaked underfoot—and I finally waded in. Still think about that water sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
