“So, this is the ‘Mall’s Balls’,” our guide grinned, tapping the shiny steel sculpture in Rundle Mall like it was an old friend. I’d seen photos before but up close they’re weirdly hypnotic — you catch yourself in them, all stretched out and wobbly. The city was waking up; somewhere behind us a busker tried out ‘Wonderwall’ (again), and the smell of espresso drifted from a side street. We grabbed that $5 coffee deal (oat milk for me — no one blinked) and wandered on, still half-laughing about my attempt at pronouncing “Gawler” Street.

Walking through Adelaide’s shopping arcades felt like time skipping around — one minute it’s polished glass and neon signs, next it’s tiled floors and old shopfronts where locals nod at each other like they’ve done for decades. Our guide — born here, knew everyone — pointed out Parliament House (“You can go inside later if you want”) but what stuck with me was how she talked about the city’s layers: churches tucked between bars, Indigenous history right under our feet in Victoria Square (she called it Tarntanyangga too). It made me realize how much I’d missed just rushing through places before.

The last stop was outside Adelaide Central Market. People were already queuing for bread even though the shutters weren’t all up yet. Our guide handed out food tips (“Get the mushroom guy to tell you about truffles — he loves that”) and then just let us linger there. I didn’t expect to feel so at home in a city I barely knew. Still think about that first sip of coffee with the morning light bouncing off those silver balls.
