What’s the experience like?

We were already gliding past South Bank when I realized how different Brisbane looks from the water. The boat left right on time—6pm sharp for summer—and there was this gentle hum of conversation, everyone sort of settling in. Our guide, I think her name was Mel, handed out these little souvenir maps and pointed out the bridges as we slipped under them. I remember the air smelled faintly sweet, maybe jacarandas? Or just the river at dusk. Hard to say, but it felt like the city was slowing down for us.

I didn’t expect to care about a cheese platter but honestly—after a day walking around in that sticky heat—it hit the spot. There was brie (I always go for brie first), some local cheddar, crackers, even dried fruit. Someone behind me asked if you could get wine at the bar and Mel just grinned and said, “Of course.” The light started shifting while we snacked; suddenly everything outside went from warm gold to this deep blue and then—almost without warning—the city lights flickered on across the riverbanks. It’s hard not to stare when all those reflections start doubling in the water.

I kept thinking about how different Brisbane feels at night—quieter somehow but also more alive? There were couples taking selfies on deck, a kid pointing out ferris wheel lights, someone laughing too loud near the bow. The music wasn’t intrusive, just soft enough that you could still hear people chatting or the water lapping against the hull. We cruised for about 90 minutes but it didn’t feel long enough; I’d barely finished my second glass of wine when we looped back towards Eagle Street Pier. Still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic—you know?
