What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was a giant gorilla head — not real, obviously, but so close I actually stepped back. That’s how ArtVo Gold Coast gets you: you walk in expecting a regular gallery, then suddenly you’re dodging sharks or pretending to dangle off a painted cliff. The paint even smelled fresh in spots (maybe they’d just finished a mural?), and the floor was cool under my sandals. I’m not usually one for selfies, but here it felt like everyone was in on the joke — even the staff kept suggesting poses and laughing with us when we got it wrong.

We wandered through all eight zones (I lost count after the jungle bit), and every corner had something new to mess with your eyes. There was this underwater scene where my friend tried to look like she was swimming with dolphins — didn’t quite nail it, but we laughed so hard she almost dropped her phone. One of the guides, I think her name was Sia, showed us the best angle for a dragon illusion. She said people come just for that shot sometimes. I liked that no one rushed us; families were sprawled everywhere taking group photos, couples acting out silly scenes. It felt relaxed, not like those museums where you can’t touch anything.

I still think about that weird moment standing between two painted cliffs — arms out like some action hero — while a little kid next to me tried roaring at a painted tiger. You don’t really notice time passing in there; it’s all bright colors and laughter echoing off the walls. By the end, my camera roll was full of ridiculous photos (some better left unposted). If you’re in Queensland and want something different from beaches or theme parks, this is it. Just be ready to look ridiculous — in a good way.
