What’s the experience like?

We were barely awake when the van picked us up — still dark, streets empty except for a few early risers and that weird bakery smell (I swear someone was already making croissants). Our pilot, Mark, had this calm way of talking that made me forget I was about to dangle over Melbourne in a basket. The crew moved fast, laying out the balloon on some patch of grass while the city blinked on in the distance. I kept thinking: is it really legal to float over skyscrapers like this?

The lift-off was quieter than I expected. Just a soft whoosh and then suddenly we were above the rooftops, drifting right past the MCG and that endless green oval. Mark pointed out the Shrine of Remembrance — it looked tiny from up here, almost toy-like. There’s something about seeing Flinders St Station from above that makes you realize how much of Melbourne is hidden by all those tram wires and trees. The sun came up slow, orange light sliding between glass towers and bouncing off the Yarra River below. You could actually hear birdsong up there — kind of eerie with so little city noise.

I tried to spot my old apartment but got distracted by someone in another balloon waving at us (we waved back, obviously). The whole thing felt both peaceful and slightly surreal — like we’d slipped into someone else’s morning routine. Mark told us only a handful of cities let balloons fly right over downtown like this; apparently Melbourne’s weather is just unpredictable enough to make it special when it works out. We floated for maybe an hour? Hard to say — time gets weird when you’re watching sunlight crawl across rooftops.

Landing was bumpy but nobody minded — everyone just laughed and compared photos, trying to catch that one shot where the river curves through all those neighborhoods. I still think about that quiet moment before we touched down, with nothing but wind and distant traffic below.
