What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed stepping out of Guarulhos airport wasn’t the heat — it was that weird mix of jet fuel and sweet tropical air. There was this guy holding a sign with my name (always feels a bit surreal), and he waved like he actually recognized me. It made me laugh. I’d barely slept on the flight, so honestly, just seeing someone waiting felt like a small win already.

Our driver — Marcos — chatted in this soft Portuguese, but switched to English when he saw my blank face. He grabbed my suitcase before I could even protest. The car was cool inside, not freezing, but enough to make me forget how sticky my shirt had gotten outside. On the drive into Sao Paulo, I kept catching glimpses of graffiti murals and those endless apartment blocks. Marcos pointed out some bakery where he said the best pão de queijo comes out at 6am (I still can’t pronounce it right). The city’s bigger than I expected — traffic everywhere, but somehow it didn’t feel stressful sitting in that backseat.

I thought transfers would be boring but there’s something about watching a new city flicker past while you’re half-awake and not worrying about maps or taxis. We passed a street market setting up — bright fruit piles, guys yelling prices in Portuguese. For a second it hit me: I’m really here now. Maybe that’s silly for a simple airport transfer to Sao Paulo, but it stuck with me longer than I thought it would.
