Summary

Raft wild Sunwapta rapids in Jasper with expert guides and raw mountain views

You’ll plunge straight into Jasper’s wild side on this Sunwapta River rafting trip — icy spray in your face, mountain air in your lungs, laughter echoing between rapids. With all gear provided and local guides leading every twist, you’ll feel equal parts thrill and awe as you ride class III whitewater through raw Canadian Rockies scenery.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I still see it — that first flash of white water, the raft bouncing as we slid into the Sunwapta. It’s not a quiet river. Our guide, Mark, grinned at us like he knew a secret. “Sunwapta means ‘turbulent’,” he said, and I could hear the water hissing over rocks before we even paddled out. The air smelled sharp and cold, almost metallic, and my hands tingled inside the neoprene gloves they gave us. I’ll admit: I was nervous. There’s something about being zipped into a wetsuit with strangers that makes you feel both ridiculous and alive.

The first set of rapids hit fast — not huge waves, but quick drops and twists that made my stomach lurch. We shouted over the roar, half-laughing, half-panicked (maybe that was just me). Mark yelled instructions while steering us past boulders; at one point he pointed out a bald eagle perched above the riverbank. I barely caught it because water splashed right in my face — tasted like glacier melt, which I guess it is. The mountains loomed so close it felt like we could touch them if we let go of our paddles for a second (we didn’t).

The quieter stretches were almost stranger than the rapids — just drifting under those endless peaks along the Endless Chain range. Someone behind me spotted what might’ve been an elk or maybe just a big log; hard to say when your heart’s still racing from class 3 rapids. The whole thing took about four hours round trip from Jasper town, including pickup and gearing up. By the end I was soaked but buzzing — my arms wobbly from paddling and grinning like an idiot at everyone else who’d survived it too.
