What’s the experience like?

The van was already humming when I climbed in — I’d barely finished my coffee. Our guide, Maya, was sorting out everyone’s names with that kind of gentle authority that makes you trust her right away. We rolled out of Banff just as the sun started poking through the clouds, passing Castle Mountain (which honestly does look like a fortress — I kept squinting at it, half-expecting a flag). There was this smell of wet pine coming through the cracked window. The Canadian Rockies always have that fresh chill, even in June.

I’d seen pictures of Lake Louise before but standing there is something else. The water really is that turquoise — almost fake-looking, if I’m honest. Maya pointed out the Victoria Glacier behind it and told us about how the color comes from rock flour. She also let us wander on our own for a bit; I just sat on a cold boulder and watched people try to skip stones (some better than others). There were families speaking French and Mandarin nearby, all kind of hushed by the view.

When we reached Moraine Lake (the main keyword for this tour), it felt quieter somehow — maybe because it’s only open part of the year so not everyone gets to see it. The walk from the parking lot is short but my shoes still got muddy; worth it for that first glimpse of those blue waters tucked under jagged peaks. Someone in our group tried to pronounce “Moraine” in French and Maya laughed — she said locals just call it “the lake.” On the way back, she handed out bottled water and told us about her favorite hikes. I still think about that silence at Moraine Lake — you know when you just want to stay put for a while?
