What’s the experience like?

It’s just before dawn when the van pulls up in Banff — I’m still half-asleep, clutching my coffee like a lifeline. Our guide, Jamie (he’s from Canmore), hands out blankets and jokes about “Canadian summer mornings.” The air smells sharp and piney. By the time we reach Moraine Lake, the sky’s just starting to blush over those jagged peaks. I didn’t expect the hush — even the birds seem to wait for the sun here.

We climb up the Rockpile Trail (not far, maybe ten minutes if you’re slow like me) and suddenly there it is: that blue water everyone talks about. It almost doesn’t look real in the early light — kind of milky turquoise, with mist curling off it. Jamie pours more coffee from a battered thermos. Someone passes maple syrup cookies around (I took two). There’s this feeling that nobody wants to talk too loud or ruin it.

Lake Louise is next — only about half an hour away but feels like a different world. The glacier sits behind the lake like some old secret. We walk along the shoreline; I try skipping stones but they mostly plop straight down. A couple is already out on a canoe, red jackets bright against all that blue-green water. My hands are cold but I don’t mind; honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when I can’t sleep.
