What’s the experience like?

“You’re gonna want the poncho,” our guide said, handing it over with a grin that made me think he’d seen plenty of soaked tourists. I laughed—didn’t think I’d need it, but then the Niagara City Boat Cruise pulled right into the mist and suddenly my glasses were useless. The roar was everywhere, like thunder in your chest. The water felt cold on my face, sweet somehow, and for a second I just stood there blinking at the Horseshoe Falls like an idiot. Our guide, Samir, pointed out where the Canadian side curves—he said you can always tell locals because they lean into the spray instead of away from it.

The best part? No lines. We just walked past this long queue of people shuffling in plastic raincoats and I caught myself feeling a bit smug (sorry). After drying off in the SUV—heated seats, thank god—we headed to Journey Behind the Falls. That tunnel smell hit me first: wet stone and something metallic. You feel tiny down there, honestly. Samir led us to a quieter platform where you can actually feel the ground tremble under your shoes. My nephew tried to shout over the noise but gave up and just grinned at me instead.

Lunch was wherever we wanted—Samir suggested a vineyard outside Niagara-on-the-Lake and we went for it. Sun came out while we ate; tasted icewine for the first time (sticky-sweet, not my thing but my sister loved it). On the drive back along Niagara Parkway, he pulled over at this random spot to show us rapids so blue they looked fake. He told stories about old daredevils who tried to cross them in barrels—one of those things you’d never read on a sign.

We ended up at Skylon Tower as dusk started settling in. The elevator ride is fast—my stomach dropped a little—and then suddenly everything’s laid out below you: all that water rushing toward Lake Ontario, city lights flickering on. I still think about that view sometimes when I hear running water at home; it’s not even close.
