What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest—I’d only seen Dubrovnik from inside those old stone walls before. But this time, we hopped into a tuk tuk (never thought I’d do that in Croatia) and suddenly the city felt different. Our driver, Marin, waved at someone every five minutes—he seemed to know half the town. We zipped past Lapad Beach first; it smelled faintly salty and there were locals walking their dogs along the promenade, not a tour group in sight. The breeze was warm on my face but not sticky like July gets here. I kept thinking, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

We rolled through Port Gruž next—the marina’s all working boats and big ships coming in, nothing polished for tourists. There was a guy selling figs out of his trunk by the road (Marin said they’re best in late summer). Then we stopped at Franjo Tuđman Bridge. The view caught me off guard—Ombla River winding away below us, mountains in the distance, the city just sort of sprawled out quietly. It was quieter than I expected up there actually; you could hear gulls and traffic humming far off. I took a hundred photos but none really got it right.

Mount Srđ was our last stop—classic view but seeing it after winding up those back roads made it feel earned somehow. Marin pointed out Lokrum Island and told us about his cousin who used to fish there (I’m still not sure if he was joking). We sat for a while just watching the light shift over the sea—didn’t rush back down. My phone still smells faintly of sunscreen from where I set it on my lap to just look around for once.
