What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was half-expecting the usual airport scramble when we landed in Curacao. But there was my name on a sign—spelled right and everything—held by a guy named Franklin who gave this little nod like he’d been waiting just for us. The air outside the terminal felt thick and warm, sort of sweet too, and I remember the car smelled faintly of coconut from the wet towels he handed out. It sounds silly but after that flight, that tiny gesture made me feel like I could finally exhale.

The drive into Willemstad wasn’t long, maybe twenty minutes? Franklin kept up this gentle commentary—pointing out where the city splits into Punda and Otrobanda (I still mix them up), mentioning how sometimes you can catch a glimpse of those crazy-colored buildings if you’re staying east. He had WhatsApp open on his dash for any questions, which made me laugh because my mom immediately asked about WiFi. Yes, it’s free onboard. The bottle of water was ice-cold and honestly tasted better than it probably should have.

On the way back to the airport a few days later, it rained for five minutes then stopped like nothing happened. Franklin waited while we wrestled our bags into the van—no rush at all. He even helped fold up my friend’s stroller without making us feel clumsy about it. There’s something about being met by a real person instead of just another taxi line; I still think about that calm ride as the real start (and end) to our trip.
