What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the clatter of ropes against metal as we boarded at Latchi harbour — that sound somehow made it feel real, like we were about to actually set off and not just pose for photos. Our guide (I think her name was Eleni?) waved us on with a grin and pointed out the Baths of Aphrodite as we pulled away. The water changed color every few minutes — sometimes almost silver, sometimes that bright turquoise you see on postcards but never expect to find in person. There was a couple from Limassol near us who kept joking about how cold the sea would be. They were wrong, by the way.

The Demetris Chara boat trip is pretty relaxed. We drifted past St George’s Church and some caves (Manolis Sea Caves, if I heard right) while Eleni told stories about local fishermen and old shipwrecks — she had this habit of laughing at her own jokes before anyone else did. The sun was sharp but not harsh; I could smell charcoal starting up before we even dropped anchor at the Blue Lagoon. I didn’t expect to get hungry so fast but something about sea air does that to you. When they called us for BBQ — souvla, potatoes, olives, salad — it felt like a family picnic but floating.

I jumped in after lunch even though I’m usually more of a “watch from the deck” type. The water was clear enough to see tiny fish darting around my toes and someone handed me a snorkel mask (not sure whose it was but nobody seemed to mind). There’s this weird quiet underwater except for distant laughter echoing from above. I still think about that view when I close my eyes at night — sunlight flickering through blue water.

We headed back just as the breeze picked up and everyone looked sun-drunk and happy. Someone spilled their coffee and just laughed about it; nobody cared because honestly, what’s a little mess when you’re floating off Cyprus?
