What’s the experience like?

Someone hands me a bright yellow helmet before I even realize we’re at Wacky Rollers Adventure Park. There’s this easy laughter between the guides—one of them, Marcus, grins and asks if anyone’s nervous. I probably looked it. The air is thick, smells like wet leaves and something sweet, maybe fruit trees? We pile into an old bus that rattles up to the Layou River. I’m distracted by the way the sunlight flickers through banana palms outside the window—kind of hypnotic.

I didn’t expect the water to be so cool. The first splash wakes you up fast, but then you just start floating. Our guide keeps calling out little facts—apparently this is Dominica’s longest river, 14 miles or so, but we’re only doing about 90 minutes of it. Sometimes there are these gentle rapids that spin you around (I got stuck on a rock for a second; Marcus just laughed and gave me a push). There’s shouting and laughing from everyone as we bump along—at one point I caught a whiff of woodsmoke drifting over from somewhere upstream.

We stop halfway for drinks—some kind of local juice, cold and tangy—and people are wringing out their shirts while swapping stories about who almost tipped over. The changing area at Hillsborough Reception is basic but fine; honestly I was just happy to be dry again for a minute. It’s funny how quickly you forget about everything else when you’re just drifting under those huge green trees, listening to the river slap against your tube. Even now I still think about that feeling sometimes—you know?
