What’s the experience like?

I barely slept on the flight, so when I walked out into the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport, I was half-expecting chaos. Instead, there was my name on a sign—simple as that. The driver (Mahmoud) grinned and waved me over, which felt oddly comforting after twelve hours of recycled airplane air. He took my bag before I could even protest. It’s weird how quickly you can relax when someone else is steering the whole thing.

The car was cool inside—thank God for AC—and there was bottled water waiting. Mahmoud asked if I wanted music or silence; I just laughed and said “surprise me.” He put on something soft in Arabic that matched the slow crawl of traffic outside. Honestly, I didn’t expect to notice the city smells so soon: dust, something sweet like pastries from a nearby stand, then a whiff of exhaust as we passed an old bus. We talked about football for a bit (he’s an Al Ahly fan), but mostly he let me stare out the window at Cairo waking up.

He checked my hotel address twice, just to be sure—apparently some streets have almost identical names here. When we finally pulled up to my place in Giza, he helped with my suitcase again and handed me his card “just in case.” Not pushy at all. I still think about how easy it all felt compared to other airport transfers I’ve had—no awkward waiting around, no confusion about where to meet. Even got a reminder text the night before with instructions; made me feel like someone actually cared if I landed okay.
