What’s the experience like?

The first thing that happened in Cairo: my suitcase did a slow-motion tumble off the luggage cart, right in front of the driver holding my name. He grinned and helped me scoop it up — no fuss, just a quick “welcome” and a joke about Egyptian bags always wanting to explore on their own. I’d booked this private airport transfer because I didn’t want to mess around with taxis after a long flight, and honestly, seeing someone waiting for me felt like relief. The car was spotless and cool inside, which hit different after the sticky air outside.

Our driver (I think his name was Mahmoud?) pointed out the Nile as we left the airport — just casually, like it was no big deal. The city felt huge already. There was this faint scent of petrol mixed with something sweet from a nearby bakery as we crept through early traffic. I asked if all the cars had GPS because my dad’s obsessed with safety stuff, and he nodded, showing me the little tracker screen on the dashboard. He said all their cars are new and fully insured — apparently it’s a rule from the Ministry of Tourism here. That actually made me relax more than I expected.

I kept watching people out the window — families waving at each other, kids balancing bread on trays above their heads (how do they do that?). The whole drive took maybe 40 minutes to downtown Cairo but it didn’t feel long. At one point Mahmoud handed me bottled water without saying anything; just saw I looked tired, I guess. We pulled up right to my hotel door and he insisted on carrying my suitcase inside — even though I tried to grab it myself (he won that round). Looking back now, that quiet ride set the tone for my whole trip — safe, easy, a little bit surprising in small ways you don’t expect.
