What’s the experience like?

“Did you ever try sleeping in the middle of nowhere?” That’s what our guide, Mahmoud, asked as we bumped along outside Bahariya Oasis. I just laughed—my answer was obvious. The drive from Cairo was longer than I expected (I might’ve dozed off a bit), but when we finally stopped for tea at the oasis, it felt like stepping into a different world. The air smelled faintly sweet—like date palms and dust—and there was this quiet hum from a group of kids playing nearby. We stretched our legs before heading out again, deeper into Egypt’s Black Desert.

The first thing that hit me about the Black Desert was how silent it is. You’d think black volcanic hills would feel harsh or dead, but they’re weirdly soft underfoot—almost sandy, not sharp like I pictured. Mahmoud showed us these tiny quartz crystals scattered everywhere; he picked one up and handed it to me (I almost dropped it). He explained how wind shapes everything out here, even the rocks. We took photos but honestly, my phone couldn’t catch that shimmer right at sunset. It’s something you have to see yourself.

Later on, rolling into the White Desert felt like landing on another planet—chalky towers everywhere, some shaped like giant mushrooms or camels if you squint right. Dinner was cooked over a fire by our Bedouin hosts (I still think about that smoky rice), and we sat around swapping stories while the sky turned ridiculous shades of pink and blue. At night it got colder than I thought; I pulled my jacket tight and just listened to nothing for a while—no cars, no city noise, only wind scraping past our camp.

I woke up before dawn because someone started making tea (the smell drifted straight into my dreams). Sunrise over those white rocks is… well, words don’t really work for it. We packed up slowly and headed back toward Bahariya Oasis—everyone quieter than before. Maybe tired or maybe just not ready to leave yet.
