What’s the experience like?

“So, you’ve never seen traffic like Cairo,” our guide Hossam joked as we crawled past donkey carts and honking taxis toward the Giza Pyramids. I was still half-awake from jetlag, but then we turned a corner and—bam—those massive triangles just rose up out of the city haze. There’s something about seeing them in real life that doesn’t quite fit your brain. Hossam handed us cold water (bless him) and started telling stories about Khufu and how each block was dragged here. I kept touching the limestone, half-expecting it to be warm from all those centuries of sun.

The Sphinx looked smaller than I’d pictured but also more mysterious—its face kind of unreadable. There was a moment when everything got quiet except for a stray dog barking somewhere behind us, and I caught this whiff of dust and old stone. We climbed up to a panoramic spot where camels waited, their bells clinking softly. Riding one felt awkward (my knees still remember), but seeing the whole plateau from up there… I can’t really explain it. Someone in our group tried to say “shukran” to a camel handler; he grinned so wide you’d think we’d paid him in gold.

I didn’t expect to love the Grand Egyptian Museum as much as I did. It’s huge—like you could get lost if you wandered off—and filled with things that make your head spin: Tutankhamun’s sandals, ancient tools, jewelry so delicate it looks modern. The air inside is cooler, smells faintly like new paint mixed with something older. Hossam kept pointing out tiny details—painted eyebrows on statues or faded hieroglyphs—and somehow made 4,000 years feel almost close enough to touch.

And then came the ATV ride across the sand dunes—I nearly chickened out because engines aren’t really my thing, but honestly? It was pure fun. Sand flying everywhere, wind whipping past my ears, views of the pyramids that felt straight out of a movie. By lunch (falafel wraps and sweet tea at a local spot), everyone was grinning like kids who’d just gotten away with something. The drive back through Cairo traffic felt different after all that dust and sun—I still think about that view from the dunes sometimes.
