What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous stepping off the plane at Luxor Airport — I’d barely slept, and my Arabic is… well, let’s just say it’s not great. But right after customs, there was this guy holding a sign with my name (I always wonder if they’ll spell it right). He smiled and waved like we already knew each other. The air outside was warmer than I expected for late evening, kind of soft and dusty, and there was this faint smell of jasmine somewhere — or maybe that was just wishful thinking after the flight.

Our driver introduced himself as Ahmed. He took my bag without fussing about its size (I definitely overpacked), and led me out to the car. There were a few other drivers chatting nearby in fast Egyptian Arabic — lots of hand gestures, some laughter. The ride into Luxor city didn’t take long, maybe 20 minutes? Hard to tell; I kept staring out at the palm trees and those faded pastel buildings you see everywhere here. Ahmed pointed out the Nile as we crossed a bridge — he said something about how the river never sleeps. I liked that.

The whole private airport transfer felt easy, honestly. No haggling or confusion about where to go, just straight to my hotel on the West Bank. Ahmed even waited while I fumbled for my hotel voucher (which he didn’t really need). It’s funny how something so simple can set the tone for a trip — that first welcome makes you feel less like a stranger. I still think about that first night when I hear taxi horns or catch that dry desert scent on my clothes later.
