What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest, I was a bit nervous about getting from the Intercontinental Resort to Nadi Airport — you know how travel days can go sideways. But our driver (I think his name was Sami?) was already waiting in the lobby with my name on a sign, smiling like he’d known us for ages. The lobby smelled faintly of frangipani and sunscreen, which is probably how I’ll always remember Fiji now. He took my bag before I could even get a grip on it — not in a rushy way, just quietly helpful.

The van was cool inside, which felt like such a relief after that thick morning heat. My little one had a baby seat all set up (I’d asked ahead), and Sami double-checked the straps himself. We ended up chatting about rugby and where he grew up near Sigatoka — he laughed when I tried to pronounce it right. At one point we stopped at a supermarket because I realized I’d forgotten snacks for the flight; no eye-rolls or hurry-up vibes at all, just “take your time.”

I kept watching the sugarcane fields blur by outside, thinking how weirdly calm I felt compared to most airport runs. There’s something about having someone local drive you — it’s like you’re still in Fiji until the very last minute. When we pulled up at Nadi Airport, Sami helped with every bag and even waved goodbye as we disappeared inside. That small gesture stuck with me longer than expected.
