What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me wasn’t the size of the Louvre, or even the crowds — it was how quiet it felt once we stepped past security and into those cool stone corridors. Our guide, Marie, waved us over with a grin and handed out little headsets (I’m not usually a fan, but these actually helped). She started right away, pointing out details I’d have missed on my own — like the grooves in the medieval foundations, still rough under all that history. I caught a faint whiff of old paper and something floral as we walked deeper in. Maybe someone’s perfume? Or just Paris doing its thing.

I’ll admit, I thought I’d just breeze past the Venus de Milo, but Marie slowed us down. She told us about missing arms and ancient gossip — apparently people used to argue about what she was holding. The marble looked almost soft in that light. In the Apollo Gallery, gold flashed everywhere and she made us laugh describing Napoleon’s taste for drama (I tried to imagine wearing one of those crowns — not my style). The group was small enough that we could ask questions without feeling awkward; someone asked about Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People and Marie got genuinely animated explaining why it mattered so much during revolutions.

By the time we reached Michelangelo’s sculptures, my feet were starting to ache but I didn’t really care. There was this hush around Psyche and Cupid — maybe just our group pausing together, or maybe everyone else felt it too. And then came Mona Lisa. Smaller than you expect (everyone says that), but honestly her eyes do follow you. We crowded in for a look while Marie kept things moving so no one got stuck behind a phone screen. It was three hours but somehow didn’t feel long enough.
