What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is Eleni waving us over by the bakery window, her hands dusted with flour. She pressed a warm slice of bougatsa into my palm—flaky, not too sweet, just this soft cheese melting through the layers. I tried to thank her in Greek and she grinned, correcting my accent with a quick laugh. The morning air smelled like coffee and something fried drifting from a nearby stall. That’s how our Chania street food tour really started—not with a speech, but with this tiny exchange that made me feel less like a tourist for a second.

Our guide (Yannis, always ready with stories) led us through the maze of the Old Town, ducking under laundry lines and past blue doors chipped by salt wind. He stopped suddenly at Splatzia square—“Here,” he said, “you have to try the Greek coffee.” It came thick and strong in little cups, grounds swirling at the bottom. We sat outside while old men argued about football two tables away; there was this easy rhythm to it all. After that we wandered into shops where goat cheese was sliced right in front of us—sharp and grassy—and Yannis poured us raki that burned just enough to wake me up.

I didn’t expect to care about Venetian architecture but somehow, walking along the harbor with the lighthouse ahead and sunlight bouncing off those faded yellow walls, it got to me. There were cats everywhere (one tried to steal my kaltsounia), and kids playing near the mosque where we peeked inside at an exhibition I barely understood but liked anyway. The whole day felt unhurried—even when we were eating souvlaki standing up on a corner because there weren’t any free tables left. I still think about that view across the water when we finally stopped talking for a minute.
