What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to start my day in Kefalonia watching sea turtles. Our driver, Nikos, just pulled over by Argostoli harbor and pointed—there they were, gliding around the fishing boats like they owned the place. A fisherman waved us closer and I could smell his catch even before I saw it. The turtles seemed to know him too. It was oddly peaceful, standing there with locals chatting about last night’s soccer match while the water lapped at the dock. Not what I pictured for a “shore excursion,” but honestly, it felt more real than any postcard.

The caves were next—Drogarati first. You step down into this cool, echoey world where everything drips and glistens. It’s 18°C down there (Nikos joked it’s “Greek air conditioning”), and you can actually feel your skin tighten from the humidity. The big chamber is called the Concert Hall; apparently, singers love it for the acoustics. I tried humming but just ended up laughing at myself because it sounded like singing in a bathroom times a hundred. Then Melissani Lake—now that’s something else. Sunlight pours through a hole in the cave roof and turns the water this wild shade of blue-green you don’t really see anywhere else. The boatman told us stories about nymphs living here; I don’t know if I believe him but for a minute it did feel kind of magical.

We stopped for coffee near Karavomilos Lake where everything smelled faintly like pine needles and bread baking somewhere close by. Locals sat outside their little taverna, not in any hurry at all. Agia Efimia was just a quick photo stop (I wish we’d lingered), but Assos village made me want to stay forever—pastel houses stacked up under an old castle, cats everywhere, bougainvillea spilling over walls. You get these moments where you just stand still because you can’t take it all in.

The last stop was Myrtos Beach—the famous one you see on every Kefalonia day trip brochure from Argostoli or cruise ship pamphlet. But seeing it from above is different; the cliffs drop away so suddenly that your stomach flips a little if you look too long. The sand really is that white, and the water does that crazy turquoise thing when the sun hits just right. I took about fifty photos but none of them caught how bright everything felt up there.
