What’s the experience like?

I almost tripped over my own flip-flop on the steps in Oia — not the glamorous start I’d pictured for a flying dress photoshoot in Santorini. Our photographer, Yannis, just grinned and handed me this bright red gown that looked straight out of some movie. He’d brought it in a big garment bag (I was nervous about the fit, but he did all these quick adjustments right there on the street). The wind was already picking up, which I thought would ruin everything — but apparently that’s exactly what you want for these photos. Who knew?

There was this woman named Eleni who helped toss the dress so it would catch the breeze just right. She kept saying “again!” and we’d all laugh because sometimes the fabric just flopped down like a tired flag. At one point I could smell someone’s morning coffee drifting over from a nearby café — totally normal life happening while I’m standing there pretending to be some kind of goddess against those white walls. The sun felt sharp on my shoulders, but honestly, I stopped caring about anything except not blinking at the wrong time.

Afterward, Yannis showed me a few shots on his camera and I actually gasped — I didn’t expect to look like that. He said they’d send all the unedited photos in about two weeks so I could pick my favorites for retouching (which takes another week or two). It’s funny how you can feel both ridiculous and weirdly powerful at the same time; maybe that’s just what happens here. Even now, every time I see those blue domes online, I remember how my dress snapped in the wind and Eleni cheered like we’d won something.
