What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect my first tuk-tuk ride in Fort Kochi to feel like such a mix of chaos and calm. The driver—Manu—grinned when he saw me clutching my bag (maybe too tightly), then just started chatting about his favorite chai stall as we zipped past the Chinese fishing nets. Those nets really do creak and sway when the fishermen pull them up. You can smell the salt and something almost metallic in the air, and there’s this quiet rhythm to it all that sort of settles you down even with traffic honking somewhere behind.

We ducked into alleys I’d never have found alone—paint peeling off old Portuguese walls, flashes of bright saris at the laundry lines near Dhobi Khana. Manu stopped at St. Francis Church and pointed out Vasco da Gama’s old gravestone. He told me how his grandfather used to bring him here for festivals. I tried saying “Mattancherry Palace” in Malayalam (no luck), which made Manu laugh so hard he nearly stalled the tuk-tuk. There was a moment walking through Jew Town where the scent of cardamom and pepper hit me all at once—I can still smell it if I think about it.

The Paradesi Synagogue is tucked away behind antique shops, blue tiles cool underfoot. We wandered through market stalls where vendors called out prices without really expecting an answer from me. At one point, an old man offered me a handful of nutmeg just for smiling back at him—small things you don’t get on big bus tours, you know? Photo stops happened whenever I wanted (there’s a trick to posing with a tuk-tuk apparently), and Manu always seemed to know which angle worked best.
