What’s the experience like?

“You ever ridden a camel before?” our driver grinned as we bounced out of Jaisalmer in the jeep. I just laughed — honestly, I hadn’t even seen one up close until that morning. The city faded fast and suddenly it was just sand, scraggly bushes, and this weird dry silence that made my ears ring. We stopped at Kuldhara Village — supposedly haunted, though it felt more sunburnt than spooky. Our guide Ravi told us stories about why everyone left (he swears it’s true), and I tried to imagine living here with nothing but wind for company.

The camel ride was… well, bumpier than I expected. My camel was called Raju and he kept turning his head like he wanted to check if I was still there (I probably looked terrified). The sun started dipping low and everything turned gold — not the cheesy kind you see in travel ads, but softer somehow. We reached the dunes just in time for sunset; sand in my shoes, sweat on my back, and this feeling that maybe I’d finally figured out what “quiet” really means. Ravi handed around chai from a battered thermos — tasted smoky from the fire — and we all sat watching the sky change colors without really talking.

Dinner happened around a crackling campfire. Some local guys cooked dal and flatbread right there on hot coals; it smelled earthy and spicy at the same time. Someone played music on their phone (signal comes and goes), but mostly it was just laughter and the sound of wood popping in the fire. Sleeping outside felt strange at first — no tent, just a mattress under stars so bright they almost didn’t look real. I woke up once in the night because something snuffled past my feet (don’t ask what), but honestly? Lying there with nothing but sky above me is something I still think about weeks later.

Morning came early — pink light over endless sand, birds calling somewhere far off. Breakfast was simple but hot: eggs cooked over the fire again, sweet tea, a little bread. On the way back to Jaisalmer we passed through another village where kids waved at us like we were celebrities or something. It’s hard to explain how different life feels out there until you’ve actually slept in it for a night.
