What’s the experience like?

We were already weaving through the colors and shouts of Malik Ghat Flower Market before I’d even finished my first cup of chai. Our guide (Rajat—he insisted on just Rajat) seemed to know every stallholder; he pointed out marigold garlands being twisted by hands moving so fast I almost missed it. The air was thick with the scent of wet earth and crushed petals, and honestly, I nearly tripped over a basket because I was staring up at Howrah Bridge looming above us. It’s one thing seeing it in photos—another when you’re standing under all that steel, feeling the city rumble across.

I didn’t expect to feel quiet inside Mother House. Even with the street noise outside, there was this hush around Mother Teresa’s tomb that made me pause. Rajat told us stories about her work in Kolkata—his voice dropped lower here—and we wandered through her old room, sandals and all. Then back into the sunlight, past honking rickshaws, toward Kumartuli where we watched potters shape gods from river clay. The smell of damp straw clung to my shirt for hours after. One old man grinned at me as I tried to say “Durga” properly; he laughed and corrected me twice before giving up.

Lunch was our own choice (I went for kosha mangsho at a canteen Rajat recommended—spicy enough to make my eyes water), then we drifted down College Street. Books everywhere—piled on tables, spilling onto the pavement—and inside Indian Coffee House, ceiling fans creaked overhead while students argued about cricket scores two tables over. The coffee tasted burnt but somehow perfect for the place. We lingered longer than planned because no one wanted to leave that buzz of voices echoing off old walls.

By afternoon we circled Victoria Memorial’s marble steps and ducked into St Paul’s Cathedral just as rain started tapping on stained glass. I’m not sure if it was the light or just being tired from walking all day, but everything felt softer then—like Kolkata had let us see something private for a minute. On the drive back (air-conditioning never felt so good), I kept thinking about those tiny moments—the flower market noise fading behind us, or how Rajat waved goodbye like he’d known us forever.
