What’s the experience like?

I opened my eyes to headlights flickering against misty rice paddies—Ubud still half-asleep. Our driver, Wayan, grinned in the rearview mirror and handed us hot coffee in paper cups. I was honestly relieved we weren’t hiking (I’m not a morning person), just bouncing along in this old 4WD jeep toward Mount Batur. The air smelled like wet earth and clove cigarettes—someone’s radio played softly somewhere behind us.

We reached the viewpoint just before dawn, about 1,360 meters up. There was this hush—the kind you get when everyone’s waiting for something good. Our guide Ketut set up breakfast right on the jeep’s roof (I nearly dropped my toast climbing up). The sunrise wasn’t loud or dramatic; it crept over the volcano slow and gold, lighting up Lake Batur below. I tried to take a photo but gave up after a while—sometimes you just want to sit there with your hands wrapped around a mug of tea, you know?

After that, we rattled down toward the black lava fields. The ground was rough underfoot—crunchy, almost like walking on burnt toast. Ketut pointed out where the last eruption had changed everything (“That tree survived,” he said, tapping it gently). I got ash on my shoes and didn’t care. We passed another group laughing about their failed selfies; someone’s drone buzzed overhead but mostly it was quiet except for our engine and the wind. Heading back toward Ubud I felt oddly awake—a little sunburnt, hungry again already, but happy we’d done it this way instead of hiking in the dark.
