Summary

Connemara’s wild hills, sheepdog magic & Kylemore Abbey stories

You’ll roll through Connemara’s wild valleys with a local guide from Galway, wander quiet halls at Kylemore Abbey, eat lunch in Leenane village by Killary Fjord, and watch a real sheepdog demo on a working farm. Expect laughter, muddy shoes, and a sense of connection that lingers long after you’re back in town.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the bus winding through Maum Valley—mist hanging low, sheep blinking at us from the roadside. Our guide, Eoin, had this way of pointing out things you’d never spot on your own. He’d say, “See that patchwork up there? That’s old potato ridges.” The air smelled like wet grass and peat, which sounds odd but it felt right for Connemara. Honestly, I thought I’d be bored by scenery after half an hour but every turn was different—lakes flashing silver, mountains crowding in close. Someone behind me kept trying to pronounce “Twelve Bens” in Irish and we all just gave up laughing.

Kylemore Abbey really does look like something from a storybook, but it’s quieter than I expected. Inside, you can almost hear the nuns’ footsteps echoing off those stone floors. Eoin told us about the Benedictine sisters fleeing Belgium during World War I—somehow that stuck with me more than any painting or fancy room. The walled gardens were dripping with rain but still bright with flowers; my shoes squelched along the gravel and there was this earthy smell everywhere. We had time to wander alone—if you go, don’t rush it.

Lunch was in Leenane village (I had soup so thick my spoon nearly stood up), looking out over Killary Fjord where the water looked almost black under the clouds. Then we headed for the sheepdog demo—a real working farm, not some showy thing for tourists. Joe whistled and his dogs moved like shadows across the field. At one point he let us try giving commands (I failed spectacularly—Joe’s dog just stared at me). There was something grounding about watching that old partnership between man and dog—it made me think about how much tradition is still alive out here.

I left tired but weirdly peaceful, smelling faintly of wool and rain. Even now I catch myself picturing those hills when things get noisy back home.
