What’s the experience like?

Handing me a cold bottle of water before we even left Amalfi’s Darsena Pier, our captain Marco grinned and said, “Today you decide — swim or just stare?” It was early but already warm; the sea smelled faintly salty and sweet, like sun on driftwood. I picked the Sorrentine wooden boat (felt right somehow), and we set off with that low hum you get when the engine’s not pushing too hard. The coast slid past in colors I can’t really describe — not blue exactly, more like glass with light behind it.

We slowed near Li Galli islands, where Marco told us about old siren legends (he did a little singing — not bad actually). My partner jumped in for a swim; I hesitated but ended up laughing at myself because the water was shockingly clear and colder than I expected. Later, gliding under the Faraglioni rocks felt unreal — there’s this moment when you pass through the arch and everything goes quiet except for gulls overhead. I tried to take a picture but it didn’t do it justice. You know how sometimes you just have to put your phone down?

The Blue Grotto was busy (no surprise), but Marco timed it so we waited less than ten minutes. Inside, that electric blue is something else — almost fake-looking until you see your hand glowing underwater. We skipped lunch on land and instead had peaches with cold prosecco on deck (not fancy, but perfect). At Marina Piccola, there were kids splashing near shore and old men playing cards under faded umbrellas. By then my hair was full of salt and I didn’t care at all.

I still think about that last swim at the Green Grotto — sunlight flickering over rocks below, nothing urgent except maybe deciding whether to jump in again or just watch clouds drift over Capri. If you want a day trip from Amalfi to Capri that feels both relaxed and kind of personal (with enough space for small surprises), this private boat tour is probably it.
