What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit it—I was weirdly nervous before we even left Naples port. Something about seeing Capri from the ferry, all hazy and bright, made my stomach flip. Our guide, Marta, handed out ferry tickets and joked about her “sea legs” (she’s done this trip hundreds of times). The ride was quick—maybe 50 minutes?—but I kept craning my neck for that first glimpse of the island. When we landed at Marina Grande, there was this faint smell of lemons and salt in the air. That’s when I started to relax.

The Blue Grotto is what everyone talks about on a Capri day trip from Naples, but honestly, I didn’t expect to laugh so much trying to squeeze into that tiny boat. The water glowed so blue it almost looked fake—Marta said it’s sunlight bouncing off the limestone under the surface. If the weather had closed it, we’d have done a boat ride around Faraglioni instead (she promised those rocks are just as dramatic). Either way, you’re out on the water with spray in your face and Italian voices echoing off the cliffs. My hair was a mess after that.

Anacapri felt quieter—older men playing cards outside a café, laundry flapping above narrow lanes. We took this rickety chairlift up Monte Solaro; my knees wobbled but wow… you really do see all of Capri spread out below you. Lunch was simple: ravioli capresi and a glass of cold white wine. There was this moment where time just slowed down—maybe it was the sun or maybe I was just tired from all the walking.

Later we wandered La Piazzetta (it’s busy but fun to watch people posing for photos) and ducked into Augustus Gardens for that postcard view of Faraglioni. The flowers smelled sweet—almost too sweet—and I found myself just sitting there while everyone else snapped pictures. On the ferry back to Naples, my shoes were dusty and my head felt full in a good way. I still think about that blue light inside the grotto sometimes—you know?
