What’s the experience like?

“You see those towers? Each one was a family’s way of saying ‘I’m more important than you,’” Marco grinned as our bus rolled into San Gimignano. I’d never thought about medieval architecture as a kind of bragging contest before, but looking up at those stone fingers poking the sky, it made sense. The air smelled faintly sweet—maybe from the gelato shop someone mentioned (I forgot to ask which flavor is best). We wandered through crooked lanes, sun warming the stones underfoot, and I kept losing track of time just staring at laundry flapping between windows. Two and a half hours felt both long and not nearly enough.

The drive to Siena was quieter. Rolling hills outside the window, vineyards that looked almost staged. At some point our guide pointed out a tiny chapel on a hill—said it’s in every postcard but nobody remembers its name. In Siena itself, we split up for a bit—free time means you can get lost if you want. I ended up in Piazza del Campo watching two old men argue (or maybe just talk loudly?) about something I couldn’t catch. The square is famous for the Palio horse race, but honestly I just liked sitting there with my espresso, feeling like maybe I belonged for five minutes.

We regrouped near the fountain—someone had bought wild boar salami and passed it around (salty, chewy, not what I expected). On the ride back to Florence, Marco told us stories about each contrada’s mascot—he did an impression of the goose that made everyone laugh except one lady who looked confused. The sun started dipping behind the hills and everything turned gold for a few minutes. I still think about that light sometimes when things get noisy back home.
