What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the sound—our boots crunching over black volcanic gravel, almost like walking on burnt toast. We’d barely left Taormina when our guide, Marco, grinned and handed out helmets for the lava cave. “Don’t worry,” he said, “the bats are friendly.” I still remember the cool air inside, that earthy smell mixed with something metallic. It’s hard to believe this place was molten not that long ago.

Climbing around the old Silvestri craters felt like being on another planet—windy, with patches of stubborn grass poking through the ash. Marco pointed out where the last eruption had spilled down towards Catania (I kept thinking how close it looked on the map). He told us stories about his grandfather seeing lava flows as a kid. At one point we stopped for a break and tried some local cheese and honey at a tiny farm—honestly, I didn’t expect to like pistachio cream but now I get it.

By afternoon we’d swapped black rock for green: walking along the Alcantara river, you could hear water rushing over stones before you even saw it. The Gorges were colder than I thought—dipping my hand in made me yelp, which made everyone laugh. There were families picnicking nearby, a couple of kids skipping rocks while their grandma yelled something in dialect (no idea what she said but it sounded encouraging). The light bounced off those crazy basalt walls; I took too many photos and none really caught it right.

I keep thinking about that moment by the river—the mix of noise and quiet, cold water and warm sun on my back. Sicily surprises you like that. If you’re looking for a day trip from Taormina that actually feels alive (and includes pickup), this is one I’d do again. Even if you butcher your Italian trying to say “Gole dell’Alcantara,” like I did.
