What’s the experience like?

“You’ll want to lean out the window for that first glimpse of Positano,” our driver said, and he was right — the houses really do tumble down the cliffs like someone tipped over a box of pastel crayons. We’d barely finished laughing about my failed attempt at ordering coffee in Italian when we pulled over for a photo stop. The air smelled faintly salty, mixed with something floral I couldn’t quite name. I tried to capture it all in one shot but gave up — you just can’t.

Sorrento felt different. Busier, somehow softer around the edges. Our guide pointed out lemon groves as we wound into town, and I swear you could smell them before you saw them. We tried limoncello — not my usual thing, but it was cold and sharp and woke me up after too much sun. There was this little shop where an old man was carving wooden music boxes; he winked at us as we wandered by. I still think about that moment, actually.

Pompeii is something else entirely. Walking those ancient streets, stones worn smooth under your shoes — it hits you how ordinary life must have been before everything changed in an instant. Our guide told stories about daily routines there; I kept picturing kids running through those same alleys. It was hot and quiet except for distant cicadas and our footsteps echoing off old walls. By the time we got back to Naples (air conditioning never felt so good), my head was buzzing with images — not all of them easy to explain, you know?
