“Is it really leaning that much?” That was the first thing I blurted out when we rolled up to Pisa. Our driver, Marco, just grinned and said, “Wait till you see it from the side.” The drive from Livorno cruise port only took about half an hour—felt even quicker with the air conditioning and his playlist of old Italian pop songs humming in the background. We got dropped right near Piazza dei Miracoli (seriously close, not like those ship tours that leave you sweating blocks away). The grass was still a bit damp from last night’s rain, so my sneakers squeaked as I tried to get that classic photo. It smelled faintly of espresso from a nearby café. I didn’t expect to actually feel nervous standing under the Leaning Tower—it really does look like it could tip if you stare too long.

After Pisa, we headed straight for Florence. Marco made a quick stop at Piazzale Michelangelo first—he insisted we’d regret skipping the view. He was right. The whole city stretched out below us in this hazy morning light, Arno river winding through all those old rooftops. I tried to take a panorama but my hands were shaking a little (maybe too much coffee). Then he drove us down into the heart of Florence itself—right past Santa Croce where he pointed out Galileo’s tomb (“He never saw his own statue here,” Marco said with a shrug). The van squeezed through streets so narrow I thought we’d scrape someone’s Vespa.

We got free time around Piazza della Repubblica—enough for gelato and wandering. I ducked into the Duomo for a few minutes; inside it felt cool and echoey, all marble and candle smoke. Outside, people crowded Ponte Vecchio snapping photos or just leaning on the railings watching the water slide by underneath. There was this moment on the bridge where everything went quiet for me—even with all the tourists—and I just watched sunlight flicker on gold shop windows. I still think about that view sometimes.

The best part? We didn’t have to rush back or worry about missing our ship—the driver had it all timed out perfectly. And honestly, having WiFi in the van meant I could spam my family chat with photos before we even left Florence. Not everything went smoothly (I lost my map twice), but somehow that made it better—you know?
