What’s the experience like?

Someone in our group pointed at the fountain outside Pisa Centrale, squinting at the “Pisa Explorer” sign. That’s how we found our guide—Chiara, who greeted us like she’d been waiting for old friends. She handed out headsets (which I didn’t think I’d need, but turns out they’re great when traffic or laughter gets loud). We set off toward Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, and honestly, I was still shaking off my early train ride when Chiara started talking about Pisa’s old rivalries and river floods. The air smelled faintly of coffee from a bar nearby—made me wish I’d grabbed an espresso first.

We stopped by this wild Keith Haring mural—huge and bright, almost humming against the pale buildings. Chiara told us it was his last one ever. A couple of teenagers were sitting under it, sharing something that smelled suspiciously like pizza. Then we wandered down Corso Italia, dodging bikes and locals with their shopping bags. There’s something about hearing a city’s story while you watch people actually living in it; it makes all those textbook facts stick differently. At Ponte di Mezzo, the Arno glittered under a sky that couldn’t decide if it wanted to rain or not (it didn’t), and Chiara pointed out Palazzo Blu—apparently there’s always some new art inside but we just admired its color.

Borgo Stretto felt narrower than I expected, all arches and shadows and shop windows full of pastries. Someone in our group tried to pronounce “cavalieri” as we reached Knights’ Square—Chiara smiled but didn’t correct him (I probably would’ve butchered it too). She talked about how this used to be Pisa’s political heart, back when ships lined the riverbanks instead of tour buses. It’s funny—standing there you can almost hear echoes if you listen past the scooters buzzing by.

The tour ended at Piazza dei Miracoli—the Leaning Tower right there, looking even more improbable in person than in photos. We didn’t go up (not included), just circled around as Chiara shared stories about marble thieves and cathedral secrets. I caught myself just staring up at that tilt for way longer than I meant to. Even now, sometimes when things feel off-kilter at home, I think about how that tower is still standing after all these centuries—and somehow that helps.
