What’s the experience like?

Is it weird that the first thing I noticed was the smell of warm stone? We’d just hopped into the golf cart outside our hotel (pickup was right on time, which honestly surprised me for Rome), and as we zipped through the streets, there was this mix of old masonry, faint espresso from a late-night bar, and something sweet — maybe someone selling roasted chestnuts? Our guide Paolo waved at a woman walking her dog near Piazza del Popolo, then told us stories about the square’s twin churches. He had this way of making you feel like you were just out with an old friend who happened to know everything about Rome.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a night tour. Paolo pointed out the Trevi Fountain all lit up — said it looked like “gelato under moonlight,” which made us all hungry. At the Spanish Steps, a couple posed for photos while their kid tried (and failed) to chase pigeons. The city felt softer at night; even the Pantheon seemed less intimidating in that yellow glow. We passed street artists near Piazza Navona, their music echoing off the cobblestones, and I caught myself grinning for no real reason. Maybe it was just being able to see so much without feeling rushed or crowded.

The best view? Gianicolo Hill. The whole city spread out below, tiny headlights winding between domes and ruins. There was this hush up there — even Paolo stopped talking for a second. I still think about that moment sometimes when I hear traffic back home; it’s not quite the same.
