What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel so calm walking into the Vatican Museums in Rome that late in the day. Maybe it was just relief after dodging the morning crowds, or maybe it was Mike — our guide from New York who’s lived here forever, always cracking jokes about Roman traffic. He handed us these little headphones (which I kept fiddling with), and we followed him past all those endless lines. Felt a bit surreal, honestly.

The light inside was softer than I imagined, almost golden on the marble floors. Mike pointed out details I’d never have noticed — like tiny cracks in a Raphael fresco where the paint’s faded just so. There was this moment in one of the quieter halls where you could actually hear your own footsteps echo. A woman beside me whispered “wow” under her breath at some old statue, which made me smile. It’s funny how even in a place packed with history, people still get surprised.

And then there was the Sistine Chapel. I’d seen photos but standing under Michelangelo’s ceiling… well, my neck hurt after five minutes but I barely noticed at first. The guards shushed everyone every few minutes, but there were these little pockets of silence that felt almost sacred. Mike told us a story about Michelangelo arguing with a cardinal — apparently he had quite a temper. I still think about that blue on the ceiling; it’s nothing like pictures.
