What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was the color of the water near Torre Vado — not just blue, but this weirdly electric turquoise that almost looked fake. We squeezed onto the boat (max 12 people but it felt friendly, not crowded), and our skipper, Matteo, grinned at us like he’d known us for years. He pointed out San Gregorio as we left the port — said you can only really appreciate it from the sea. The engine was loud at first but then I kind of forgot about it, maybe because I was too busy watching the coastline flick past.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much with strangers. When we stopped by Marcheddu Tower, someone tried to pronounce “Bagnarole” and Matteo just shook his head and told us stories about old villas from the 1800s along Santa Maria di Leuca. The caves themselves were cooler than I thought — literally cool inside, like stepping into air conditioning after baking on deck. The light bounced off the walls in these odd patterns. At Punta Meliso you could actually see where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet; Matteo joked about which side had better fish (he never answered).

We made three swim stops — I’m not much of a swimmer but they handed out jackets and masks so even I could float around and peek under the surface. There’s this salty tang in the air that clings to your skin all afternoon. Afterward, we sat under the awning with peach tea and prosecco (they poured generously) and shared taralli and olives while everyone swapped stories about where they were from. Not fancy food but honestly perfect after swimming. Sunburned cheeks, salt in my hair — I still think about that view back toward Leuca as we headed home.
