What’s the experience like?

Someone’s waving my name on a little sign before I’ve even had time to fumble for my sunglasses. Turns out that’s our airport rep, smiling like he actually means it. He calls over our driver—Mr. Brown—and suddenly the sticky shuffle of arrivals and the noise just fade behind us. The car’s cool inside (thank God for air conditioning), and there’s this faint scent of coconut from somewhere, maybe someone’s snack? We’re already rolling out of Montego Bay before I realize how nice it is not having to share the ride or wait for a bus to fill up.

Mr. Brown asks where we’re from and then starts telling us about the sugar cane fields we’re passing—he says his uncle used to work out here, back when things were different. I try to pronounce “Lucea” the way he does; he laughs and gives me a look like, “nice try.” The road gets quieter as we get closer to Grand Palladium Resort, and there’s this moment where all you hear is the hum of tires and some reggae playing low on the radio. Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed so soon after landing.

I keep thinking about how much time we saved—no random hotel drop-offs or awkward small talk with strangers crammed in beside us. Just us, our bags in back, and Mr. Brown pointing out which beaches are best for jerk chicken (he swears by one spot but won’t tell us until we promise not to skip breakfast at the resort first). When we finally pull up at Grand Palladium, it feels less like an arrival and more like being handed over gently into vacation mode. That little transition matters more than I thought it would.
