Our guide showed us how to spot seasonal flowers—there were irises just starting to open—and explained why the bridges are curved just so. I didn’t expect to feel so calm there, standing by a pond while a breeze moved through the pines. We ended up in Higashi Chaya geisha district as the light started to change, gold on old wood and paper lanterns flickering on. She told us about geisha traditions but also pointed out where locals actually go for tea now—which felt honest somehow.

I still think about that view over the castle walls—gray tiles against green trees—and how easy it was to ask our guide anything, even silly stuff about vending machines or why everyone lines up so neatly at crosswalks.
