What’s the experience like?

“Señorita, over here!” That’s what I heard as soon as I stepped out of the arrivals hall at Cancun Airport, blinking in the heat and clutching my bag like it might run off without me. There was a guy in a crisp white shirt waving a little sign with my name — not gonna lie, that felt oddly reassuring after the flight. He grinned when I tried to pronounce “Akumal” properly (I think I said it like three different ways), and just laughed, “Don’t worry, you’ll get it by tomorrow.”

The van was waiting in the parking area marked for tourist operators — you can’t miss it if you follow the signs. It smelled faintly of coconut air freshener and something else… maybe sunscreen? The AC hit me right away, which honestly felt like a small miracle after the sticky airport air. We tossed our bags in and settled in; there were even infant seats ready (my friend had messaged ahead for one). Our driver chatted about his favorite taco stand near Akumal — he said we should try cochinita pibil if we had time. The ride itself was smooth, just over an hour depending on traffic, but I barely noticed because I kept watching the jungle flicker past outside.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed on a simple airport transfer, but there’s something about having someone local handle the details — especially when you’re tired or traveling with kids. At one point my daughter fell asleep against my arm and I just watched the light shift through the tinted windows. It’s funny how those quiet moments stick with you more than you’d think.
