What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel so relieved just seeing my name on a little sign at Cancun Airport. After the flight, the heat hit me right away—like walking into a bakery’s open oven, but heavier. Our driver, Arturo, found us in the crowd (Terminal 3 is a maze, by the way) and just grinned like he’d done this a thousand times. He helped with our bags and led us out to an air-conditioned van that felt like a small miracle. I remember the seats were cool against my back, which was honestly all I cared about for those first few minutes.

The drive from Cancun to Chiquila took about two hours, but it didn’t drag. We passed stretches of jungle so thick you couldn’t see more than a few meters in. Arturo pointed out some little roadside fruit stands—he said the pineapples are best in June, but we were too tired to stop. The road was quiet except for his playlist of old rancheras humming low in the background. Somewhere along the way I realized how far Holbox really is from Cancun; it’s not just a quick hop, but it’s worth it if you want that feeling of leaving everything behind.

At Chiquila port, Arturo handed us our ferry tickets and made sure we knew where to go (I probably looked confused—he smiled and repeated himself in slower Spanish). The boat ride over was short—maybe half an hour—but I still remember the salty wind and how everyone seemed lighter as we left the mainland behind. On Holbox dock, another guy from their team waved us down and loaded our bags onto his golf cart taxi. Bumping through sandy streets past painted houses and barefoot kids laughing—I don’t know why that stuck with me. Maybe because it felt like arriving somewhere completely different.
