What’s the experience like?

First thing I noticed when we slid into the car outside our Tulum hotel was the faint smell of citrus — maybe those little scented towels they handed us? Our driver, Javier, gave a quick nod and asked if we wanted music or just the hum of the road. I went for silence at first, just listening to the AC clicking on and off while we settled in. The leather seats were cool against my legs, which felt weirdly fancy after days in sandy flip-flops.

We’d booked this private transfer from Tulum to Cancun airport because honestly, I didn’t want to mess around with shuttles or crowds. There was bottled water waiting for us (cold enough that it left rings on the armrest) and two Coronas each tucked into the little bar area. My partner tried to open his quietly but it hissed anyway — Javier grinned in the rearview mirror and said something about “la mejor manera de viajar” (the best way to travel). He was right. The drive itself is about two hours, give or take traffic near Playa del Carmen, but it felt shorter somehow. Maybe it’s just easier when you’re not counting stops.

I kept catching glimpses of sunlight through the sunroof — those streaks that make you squint even behind sunglasses. At one point I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once; there’s WiFi onboard but I just watched palm trees flicker past instead. It’s funny how quiet a highway can feel when you’re not crammed in with strangers or worrying about missing your flight. The only real sound was my partner trying (and failing) to pronounce “Cancún” like a local — Javier laughed and gave him a quick lesson. Not sure he nailed it but it broke up the last stretch before we hit the airport drop-off zone.
