What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how the light changed as we drove out from Marrakech—dusty gold, then almost pink on the hills. Our driver (Khalid? I think that was his name) played old Gnawa music quietly, and the windows smelled faintly of mint from someone’s tea flask. By the time we reached the edge of the Agafay Desert, my shoes were already dusted white. I didn’t expect to feel so far away so quickly—it’s only about 45 minutes from the city, but it feels like another planet.

I’d never been on a quad bike before. The guide grinned when I stalled it twice (“No problem, you learn fast!”), and then we were off—just this low roar and wind in my face. The desert isn’t all sand; it’s rocky and wild, with these little tufts of grass that look almost silver in the late afternoon. My friend tried to race me (she lost), and we both ended up laughing so hard we had to stop for water. There was a moment when we cut the engines and everything went quiet except for some distant music drifting from camp.

After that came the camels—so much taller than they look in photos. Mine was called Momo; he kept turning his head back like he was checking if I was still there. The sun started dipping behind these low hills while we plodded along in single file. It got cooler fast—someone handed us those blue scarves to wrap around our heads, which made me feel half tourist, half explorer. I still think about how peaceful it felt out there, just moving slowly while the sky turned orange.

Dinner was set up near a fire pit under a big tent (or you could sit outside—some people did). The food came in waves: salads with cumin and lemon, slow-cooked lamb that fell apart with a spoon, sweet mint tea poured high into tiny glasses. There was live music—drums and singing—and at one point a dancer pulled some of us up to join in (my rhythm is questionable at best). On the drive back to Marrakech I remember feeling kind of full—not just from dinner but from all of it. Hard to explain unless you’ve done it.
