What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel so small when we stepped into the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. The air inside smelled faintly of cedar and sea — maybe because the Atlantic is just right there, crashing somewhere behind those walls. It’s wild to think about how much patience that must’ve taken.

Samira told us stories about how the mosque was built, and I kept glancing up at the minaret — it really does seem to touch the clouds on some days. There was this moment when sunlight hit the marble floor just right and everything glowed pale gold. A kid in our group tried to whisper something in French and got shushed by his dad; it made me smile. We wandered through cool corridors where our footsteps echoed weirdly loud, and I ran my hand along a carved column (probably not supposed to do that — old habits). The whole place feels both massive and somehow gentle, if that makes sense.

I’m glad we had someone local with us; Samira answered questions I wouldn’t have dared ask alone. She even showed us where to find free restrooms — apparently people try to charge you sometimes, but she just waved them off. After the tour ended, I lingered outside for a bit watching families taking photos on the steps. Even now, whenever I see blue-green tile anywhere else, it takes me straight back there.
