“You’re looking for Sarah?” That’s what the driver called out as I scanned the crowd outside Marrakech Menara Airport, still half-asleep from the flight. I spotted him holding a sign with my name (handwritten, which felt oddly reassuring). The air was thick — orange blossom mixed with exhaust, and I remember thinking this is it, I’m really here. He smiled and took my bag like it was nothing, which honestly helped because my arms were jelly by then.

The ride into Marrakech was quiet at first. Our driver (his name was Youssef) pointed out the Koutoubia Mosque as we passed — “Always on your left when you come from the airport,” he said. He switched on the air conditioning without me asking, and even set up the WiFi for me after seeing me fumble with my phone. The city outside looked dusty but alive; mopeds everywhere, people waving their hands while talking, bright scarves fluttering in little bursts of wind. I tried to say thank you in Arabic — Youssef grinned and gently corrected me. I still think about that moment because it made me feel less like a tourist and more like someone just arriving home after a long trip.

We got as close as possible to my riad — cars can’t go deep into the medina, so Youssef explained I’d have to walk five minutes through winding alleys with my suitcase. It sounded daunting but he showed me exactly where to go and waited until he saw someone from the riad wave at us. Not everyone would do that, you know? If you’re heading back to the airport instead, they’ll pick you up right at your door. The whole thing just felt easy — no haggling over taxi prices or worrying if I’d end up in the wrong place.
