What’s the experience like?

The first thing that happened was I couldn’t find my bag on the carousel. Not the best start, but then I spotted my name on a sign — spelled right and everything — and there was Youssef grinning at me like he’d been waiting all morning. He just nodded, took my suitcase (which finally appeared), and said, “No rush, you’re here now.” The airport air smelled like jet fuel and orange blossom from someone’s perfume. I felt weirdly relieved to just follow him out.

We stepped into this spotless van — honestly, cooler than I expected after a 3am landing. Youssef handed me a tiny welcome box (dates inside!) and pointed out where the Wi-Fi password was taped up front. The city outside looked half asleep; headlights flickered past olive trees. He asked about my flight (“delayed?”) and told me how he tracks arrivals so nobody’s left waiting. I tried to say thank you in French but probably butchered it — he just laughed and switched to English.

I didn’t realize how much I needed that quiet ride until we turned onto some narrow street in the medina, lanterns still glowing even though it was nearly sunrise. Youssef helped with my bags all the way to the door of my riad, made sure I had everything, then waved goodbye like we’d met before. There’s something about landing in Marrakech that feels both chaotic and welcoming at once — maybe it’s just having someone local on your side right when you arrive.
