What’s the experience like?

We’d already lost count of the bridges when our guide, Bram, steered us under another low arch and pointed out a crooked old house leaning into the water. The city felt different at dusk—quieter, but somehow more alive with all those golden windows flickering on. I could smell a bit of rain in the air (classic Amsterdam) and the wool blanket they handed me was actually pretty nice to have. Someone up front ordered a local beer; I went for the apple juice because I’m still not sure about Dutch beers after last night.

Bram told us how the canal ring was built—he made it sound like a bunch of stubborn merchants just decided to dig their own future. He laughed when I tried to say “Grachtengordel” (I probably butchered it), but then he helped me get it right. The boat was electric so it just hummed along quietly, which made it easier to hear him talk about the Rijksmuseum all lit up on our left. There was this one moment where everyone just stopped talking and watched the lights ripple across the water—felt kind of peaceful, honestly.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed drifting through Amsterdam at night. You see people cycling by on the bridges, some waving or calling out in Dutch—kids bundled up on their parents’ bikes. It’s only an hour but you get this weird sense of being part of things here, even if you’re just floating by. The tour ended near the Anne Frank House and nobody really wanted to get off yet. I still think about that view back toward Central Station, all those reflections stretching out behind us.
